What Is Knowledge?

Webster’s New World College Dictionary defines knowledge as “all that has been perceived or grasped by the mind.” We hope that when you leave our site, your mind will have a new grasp of exciting things. Through the centuries, a lot has been said by great thinkers on the subject of knowledge. Here are some of our favorite quotations about knowledge:

“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles by it.” Thomas Fuller

“The best part of our knowledge is that which teaches us where knowledge leaves off and ignorance begins.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

“Since we cannot know all that is to be known of everything, we ought to know a little about everything.” Blaise Pascal

“Knowledge is not a shop for profit or sale, but a rich storehouse for the glory of the Creator, and the relief of men’s estate.” Francis Bacon

“As we acquire more knowledge, things don’t become more comprehensible, but more mysterious.” Albert Schweitzer

“The end of all knowledge should be in virtuous action.” Sir Philip Sidney
